Key Experiences

I graduated in Fine Arts and I am now a Management accountant at NHS!
After graduating I spent three months travelling. When I returned to the UK I began temping in a number of office roles before landing a job in Communications within the NHS. Whilst I enjoyed this role, it wasn’t planned and I didn’t have many career options ahead of me. I looked at my skills and decided I was best suited to accountancy.

I didn’t have an accounting background or any knowledge of finance, so I completed a couple of courses with The Open University whilst applying for training contracts and graduate schemes.

I also decided to run a marathon

I was asked to write a news article promoting the NHS graduate scheme as part of my Communications job, and it was exactly what I was looking for.

The selection process for the scheme is tough, but fortunately I managed to demonstrate my potential sufficiently to get the job.

Current Position

Plan and manage the income & expenditure of services in a hospital
I’ve just started working as a management accountant covering Cancer services in a medium sized hospital. This involves helping forecast, plan and manage their income and expenditure. Before this role I spent 10 months working as a capital accountant at a Primary Care Trust. Alongside these roles I also work on a number of projects aimed to improve the quality of services provided and save the NHS money.

I’m also the student representative on the ACCA’s Health Service Network panel.

Main Motivations

I really feel I’m making a difference!
I enjoy learning about the business and how services are delivered. The support is fantastic – I’ve been given lots of responsibility and really feel I’m making a difference.
