About Fiona

Key Experiences

An Anatomy graduate, now a management trainee in Health Informatics.
I graduated from the University of Dundee in 2012 with a degree in Human Anatomy and Physiology and immediately went travelling. I backpacked across the USA on my own for just over three months, and studied at the University of Tennessee before heading back to England. Before I went travelling I had only the vaguest idea that I wanted to work in Science or Healthcare, but after some time to reflect and shake off the stresses of University I started looking for work in these fields.

However, as work was hard to come by, I moved back in with my parents and started working part time in Operations at my local Boots. I soon moved over to the Pharmacy and Healthcare department, and worked on the Healthcare counter as an Advisor. During this time I started to apply for jobs in the NHS, and came across the Graduate Management Training Scheme. I chose to apply for the Informatics stream as it is an area which is constantly developing, and would give me an opportunity to develop new skills, as well as building on the analytical skills I developed during my studies.

While applying for the scheme I started a job as a Laboratory Assistant in Biochemistry at Addenbrookes Hospital. I really enjoyed my work, and it showed me that I wanted a further career in the NHS, but I wanted more responsibility and the chance to lead. When I found out my application to the graduate scheme was successful I jumped at the chance, and am looking forward to an exciting two years on the scheme, and a challenging career in the NHS.

Current Position

Business Manager in a CCG working in Strategy and Transformation
I started on the NHS Graduate Management Training scheme in Informatics in September 2013 and am now in my first substantive post after the scheme. I work as a business manager in a CCG, which mainly involves project managing various schemes and innovations.

We are currently undergoing a huge transformation which is so exciting to be a part of, and I love the opportunity to be innovative and explore ideas for improving quality and efficiency. The best part of my job is the sheer variety of projects I get to work on, and working with people from so many different types of organisation, including council, ambulance, hospitals, mental health, patients, GPs and charities.

Main Motivations

An opportunity to learn and gain a real insight into the NHS
My current position gives me an opportunity to constantly be trying new things, and I'm learning something different every day. Orientation is challenging but a fantastic opportunity to see different services and to talk to inspirational staff on the frontline of care.

Top Advice

Make the most of every experience, and if in doubt, ask questions!
There are so many valuable pieces of advice I have been given since I started the scheme, but to pick a few:

You will constantly be in new situations with new information. Ask questions, you will learn so much more.

If there's something you want to see or do then ask! Orientation is a very special opportunity to see different areas of the NHS, make the most of it.

Get involved and make the most of every opportunity, its a great way to meet people and learn new skills!

Greatest Achievement

Getting a place on the scheme and working towards a worthwhile career.
As I'm just starting out on the scheme I consider getting a place on the Informatics stream to be one of my greatest career achievements so far. I hope the scheme will help me develop my leadership skills, and am thrilled to be starting a career where what ever task I do, no matter how small, I can feel that I am helping to make a difference to people's lives.
