Key Experiences

From studying Philosophy to supporting talented Civil Servants
I studies Philosophy at university, and went on to complete a Graduate Diploma in Law, which I quickly realised wasn't the right career path for me. I started looking into public sector roles, and professions which focused more on people. I applied for the Civil Service HR Fast Stream, as this seemed to be the perfect combination, playing to my strengths and interests.

Having narrowly missed out on the Fast Stream, I joined the HR team in DWP, working in a Business Partner team working with the Universal Credit Programme, and then the Workplace Adjustments team. From there I moved to the Cabinet Office working on senior talent programmes. I have recently joined the Department of Health and Social Care where I have the pleasure of working on the new DHSC Health Policy Fast Track Scheme.

Current Position

The Civil Service, and particularly the Department of Health and Social Care, is full of highly passionate and talented people and I feel privileged to be able to support their work through making sure we recruit and develop the best people, enabling the best in public policy and service delivery. The new Health Policy Fast Track Scheme in particular provides an opportunity to grow and develop a career in public health policy, with the chance to work on an array of unique and challenging projects.

I come into work every day knowing that my work ensures that the best people are working on the policies which make a difference to the lives of everyone in this country, and with impact around the world. Supporting these talented people to realise their potential means that I am positively affecting outcomes for millions of people.

Top Advice

Do what's right for you
It's easy to get drawn into other people's reasons for applying for certain roles or schemes, but you have to make sure you do what is important to you - whether that's having a role that makes a difference, or money, or colleagues who support you, make sure they are the things that are going to sustain you, and not things other people have convinced you are important.

Greatest Achievement

Ran a series of events bringing people together
In my previous role, I ran a series of events which brought together senior civil servants from across government to share their experiences, to learn from each other and to encourage cross-departmental working towards the best outcomes for citizens. I worked with a wide range of people from a number of government departments to focus on their needs and interests, and designed a programme of events to increase cross-collaboration, and learning for individuals, and which they could take back to their teams and departments.
