Key Experiences

From studying a masters at Leeds to working on national commissioning
From finishing a one year master’s programme at Leeds to being part of a national commissioning unit at NHS England in a short period of time is something that's still sinking in. You may just have graduated like me and be joining the "real world" or you might have worked for the NHS for years but either way its quite a jump but wow is it an exciting one.

Current Position

I work on national commissioning programmes in research and innovation
My first placement is just kicking off after orientation. I'm placed in the Research and Innovation team at NHS England working on national Research and Innovation programmes that aim to spread best practice and innovation.

Main Motivations

Working on projects that will improve patient care across the country
NHS England's commissioning work takes the next step between local best practice, spread and adoption then accelerates it on a national scale. Working on these types of projects is very rewarding and gives me great pride in work I'm involved in.

Top Advice

Live your values, if they align with the NHS nothing can stop you
If you're thinking about applying or are applying now and you're sat worrying about the possibility of not getting to inspire the shared purpose that's at the heart of everything we do, then you're already living part of what the NHS is to us all. Keep going! The process may be intense at times but it's my proudest achievement to date and well worth a couple of sleepless nights.

Greatest Achievement

May be a tad cliché but getting a place on the scheme
I made one application after university for good reason, it was the only thing I wanted to do and had been for some time, so for me this opportunity is something I'm immensely proud of and still in awe of right now. The scheme offers an unparalleled opportunity to really explore the NHS and equips you for a successful career in improving patient care.

NHS

Whatever your future leadership ambitions are, the NHS offers a fantastic start with a variety of challenging placements in an organisation that is wholeheartedly determined to provide equal opportunities to all employees. Selection for the scheme is based solely on aptitude and ability to ensure we have the best leaders for the NHS.
